Let's rather rush home

  1. A.When it is dry, there is no
  2. B.I heard it is unlikely to
  3. C.If the day is cloudy, it may not
  4. D.There is no doubt it will
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: D There is no doubt it will

Why

The daughter tells her father to rush home, so she is sure rain is coming.

Only D, "There is no doubt it will rain", predicts rain. B says rain is unlikely and C says it may not rain, so neither one explains the hurry.

Rule: In a dialogue item, choose the reply that agrees with what the same speaker says next.

Question 2

Yonas: ___________ You seem to be busy. Sorome: My glasses! Have you séen them?

  1. A.What are you looking for?
  2. B.Haven't you found your glasses?
  3. C.What are you doing?
  4. D.Where are your glasses?
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: A What are you looking for?

Why

Sorome answers "My glasses! Have you seen them?", so she is searching for something.

A asks exactly that: "What are you looking for?"

D, "Where are your glasses?", is tempting, but Yonas cannot name the glasses before Sorome mentions them.

Rule: The missing line must fit the answer that comes right after it.

Question 3

Gelebo: I hope you gave the money to Mom. Dandero: _________ it was stolen. It should be in a ta

  1. A.How much was it? Perhaps
  2. B.The thieves, and
  3. C.I hope you will forgive me, but
  4. D.Unfortunately, I didn't, so
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: D Unfortunately, I didn't, so

Why

Gelebo asks whether the money reached Mom, so the reply must first answer yes or no.

D answers no and then links the loss to it: "Unfortunately, I didn't, so it was stolen."

C only asks for forgiveness and never answers the question, so the word "so" would have nothing to explain.

The last sentence of this item is cut off in our copy, but the missing words do not change the answer.

Question 4

Aster: Is he your husband? I haven't met him before. Lidya: Come on, _________ How dare you?

  1. A.I love my husband.
  2. B.why do you ask?
  3. C.my husband is handsome.
  4. D.what do you mean?
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: D what do you mean?

Why

Lidya is offended, and "How dare you?" shows her anger.

"Come on, what do you mean?" challenges the hidden idea behind Aster's question.

B, "why do you ask?", is calm and polite, so it does not match the anger that follows.

Question 5

Teacher: I don't know why but I am feeling very dizzy. Friend: ___________ see your doctor immediately. Right now!

  1. A.You had better
  2. B.You might
  3. C.It may be good to
  4. D.Oh! Perhaps
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: A You had better

Why

The friend gives strong, urgent advice, and "Right now!" proves how urgent it is.

"You had better" plus the base verb "see" is the strongest advice form among the options.

"You might" and "It may be good to" only hint, so they are too weak for a person who feels very dizzy.

Textbook: Grade 10 English, Unit 1 grammar (should, ought to and had better).

Question 6

Tutu: I am leaving for US on Monday. US, California. Titi: _______ Could you repeat that, please?

  1. A.Sorry, I didn't catch that.
  2. B.Are you trying to fool me?
  3. C.Are you leaving on Monday?
  4. D.That is too good to begrue.
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: A Sorry, I didn't catch that.

Why

Titi asks "Could you repeat that, please?", so she did not hear the message clearly.

A, "Sorry, I didn't catch that", is the normal polite way to say you did not hear something.

Think of "catch" here as catching a ball: the words were thrown, but Titi missed them.

Option D is misprinted in our copy, but it is not the answer.
