Free coding training is open to students, and the target runs to Nehase

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) has called on young Ethiopians to use the kremt holiday to enrol in the national coding programme, which passed 5,005,146 enrolments in June 2026 and now aims for seven million by Nehase 2018 E.C. The courses cost nothing and are taken individually at ethiocoders.et. A knowledge-exchange forum on the initiative was held at the Office of the Prime Minister on 10 August 2026, and the whole session has been published.

Where the programme stands

The initiative was launched in July 2024 with a three-year goal of five million enrolments. It reached 5,005,146 in under two years, and the Prime Minister announced the new figure in June: seven million, by August. Courses cover programming, data analysis, Android development and the basics of artificial intelligence.

"Five million Ethiopians have already decided; now it is your turn," the Prime Minister said in the call reported on 10 August, describing the kremt as an opportunity that should not be allowed to pass in vain.

What happened at the forum

The session at the Office of the Prime Minister opened with an exhibition tour built around artificial intelligence, which school students attended, and Billene Seyoum of the Press Secretariat spoke. She called young people's technical and digital skills a national asset and confirmed the seven million target.

The panel that followed brought together Dr Abiyot Bayou, senior adviser to the Minister of Innovation and Technology, Bethlehem Dessie, chief executive of gheero, an initiative graduate, Azmeraw Tadesse, and the technology entrepreneur Mahlet Seyoum. Young people in the room put their own questions to them. The full hour is on the Prime Minister's Office channel, linked in the sources below.

What this is worth to a school

Nothing here needs a school's involvement, which is exactly why it is easy to pass on. A teacher who tells a Grade 9 to 12 class about it in the last weeks of the holiday has done the whole job.

Worth mentioning to students

  • It is free, and the kremt holiday is the window the call was made for.
  • Registration is one person at a time at ethiocoders.et, on a phone.
  • Software development is one of the new work-and-practice trades arriving in Grade 11, so the head start is real.
  • The certificate is what was announced. Nobody should pay a third party for it.

The eleven trades arriving in Grade 11 from 2019 E.C. include software development, and the bureaus have been asked to have teachers and workshops ready before September. A student who spends the last weeks of the holiday on the basics walks into that class already knowing what a program looks like. The detail on those trades is in the circular on the eleven new subjects.
