Is there a Grade 9 national exam in Ethiopia? No, and here is what actually decides a Grade 9 student's future

This question gets searched constantly and the honest answer is short. There is no Grade 9 national exam in Ethiopia, and there is no Grade 9 regional exam either. If you have seen a site advertising "Grade 9 national exam results 2026", it is either recycling content from another country's system or generating pages to catch the search traffic.

Some of the confusion is real rather than manufactured. Kenya's competency-based curriculum introduced Grade 9 assessments, and Kenyan education content ranks widely across East African searches. Ethiopia's own recent history adds to it, since there used to be a Grade 10 national exam and people reasonably assume something still sits in that part of the system. Nothing does.

Look at the timeline from a student's point of view. They sit an external exam at the end of Grade 8, at around fourteen. The next one is the Grade 12 national exam, at around eighteen. In between are three full academic years, Grades 9, 10 and 11, where the only record of what they learned is whatever their school wrote down.

For a well-run school with proper records this is fine. For a student who changes school, whose teacher leaves mid-year, or whose marklists live in a paper ledger, it is a real risk. A Grade 11 student who transfers can arrive at the new school with nothing verifiable behind them, and the new school has no way to reconstruct it.

The Grade 12 exam is sat in one of two streams, and the split is not cosmetic. In the 2018 E.C. cycle, 306,456 candidates registered for natural science and 257,045 for social science, and they sat in separate windows with different papers. The stream a student ends up in determines which university fields are open to them.

Two things are worth being clear-eyed about when this choice comes up.

• Natural science is not automatically the better option. It is chosen by more students, it carries more social prestige, and in recent cycles it has produced a higher pass rate than social science, roughly 11% against 5%. Those are averages across very unequal schools, not a prediction about one child.
• The stronger predictor is the school, not the stream. In the 2024/25 cycle, government boarding and science schools passed at around 87% while standard government schools, where about nine in ten candidates sit, passed at 5 to 9%. A student in the second group does not change that by picking a different stream.

The useful version of this conversation is about what the student is actually good at and what they want to do, informed by three years of real marks. Which brings it back to records. You can only make that decision well if somebody kept the evidence.

   Treat Grade 9 marks as real, not as practice

   There is no external checkpoint to correct course at. A weak Grade 9 in maths compounds quietly through Grade 10 and 11 and shows up as an exam result nobody saw coming.

   Keep your own copy of every report card

   Photograph each semester's report card and keep it somewhere that survives a lost phone. If the school ever loses records, or you transfer, your copy is the only backup.

   Start Grade 12 exam familiarity early, not in Grade 12

   Students who first see the exam format in their final months lose marks to the format rather than the content. Working through past papers from Grade 10 onwards costs nothing and removes that penalty.

   By the end of Grade 10 you should be able to look at four semesters of subject marks and see a pattern. Decide from that rather than from what relatives think is prestigious.
