What Ethiopia's Grade 12 entrance exam actually looks like: six papers, 600 marks, and how the score is built

A surprising number of Grade 12 students walk into the exam hall without a clear picture of the paper in front of them: how many subjects, how they add up, what a good score even is. None of that is secret, and knowing it changes how you revise. Here is the shape of the thing.

Whichever stream you are in, three of your six papers are the same as everybody else's. English, Mathematics and the Scholastic Aptitude Test are common. The other three follow your stream.

Each subject is scored from 0 to 100. The six subject scores are then added, and the sum out of 600 is what appears on your result and what the placement process reads. Fifty per cent has been the standard threshold for direct admission to a public university, which on the 600 scale means 300 marks. The Grade 12 score checker reads any total against that line.

Two consequences follow, and they are worth stating plainly because students routinely plan as if neither were true. First, no single paper can fail you: a 30 in Chemistry can be carried by a 70 in Biology, because the total is a sum rather than a set of hurdles. Second, and for the same reason, the cheapest marks in the exam are always in whichever paper you are currently worst at.

The top score in the 2017 E.C. natural science stream was 591 out of 600, from a student at Dodola Ifa Boru School, and the highest social science score was 562. Those numbers are worth seeing once, because they establish that the paper is answerable. The distance between 562 and the 300 you need is larger than most students assume.

Fifty per cent is the standard, and it has moved. In the 2017 E.C. cycle the Ministry lowered the admission cutoff to 49.5% after results were published, which lifted the pass rate from 8.4% to 8.9% and admitted around 3,350 more students. Below the admission line there has usually been a second threshold for the remedial route, set separately by stream, gender and a few other categories.

Under the current curriculum the exam assesses content from Grade 9 through Grade 12, across the chapters of the official textbooks. During the changeover between the old and new curricula, Grade 9 was treated with more care, with testing limited to topics common to both versions so that students taught under either one were not disadvantaged.

For revision this is the fact that matters most, and it is the one most often missed. A Grade 12 student revising Grade 12 notes has covered roughly a quarter of the examinable ground.

Every question is multiple choice with four options, labelled A to D, and one correct answer. Across the 55 past papers in our own library, covering ten subjects and the exam years 2005 to 2018 E.C., the largest complete sets run to 120 questions in a paper. Some of the older sets in circulation online are partial, which is worth knowing before you conclude from a downloaded PDF that a subject only asks thirty questions.

The aptitude paper is built differently from the rest. The 2016 E.C. paper introduces its verbal section with its own instruction, listing subsections for analogy, synonyms, antonyms, word substitution, sentence completion, sentence correction, reading comprehension and analytical reasoning. It tests how you handle a question type rather than what you memorised, which is why it can be practised quickly and why leaving it to the last month is a mistake.

Ethiopia has been moving the exam online in stages. In the 2018 E.C. cycle, Addis Ababa, Dire Dawa and Harar administered it entirely online, while centres without the network or device capacity fell back to paper. In the previous cycle 134,609 candidates sat digitally, and 29,239 of them passed. That is a pass rate around 22% among online candidates against 8.4% nationally.

What the digital format does change is the physical routine: navigating between questions, flagging one to come back to, and watching a clock on the screen rather than on a wall. None of that is difficult, and all of it is unfamiliar the first time. Practising on a screen with a running clock takes the surprise out of it.

Since 2022, most candidates have been transported to public university campuses to sit the exam rather than testing in their own schools, a change made for exam security. It is the single biggest reason the pass rate fell from the levels reported before 2022, and it also means exam week now involves travel, unfamiliar dormitories and a different daily rhythm for hundreds of thousands of teenagers.

Practically: find out early where your centre is, what you are allowed to bring, and how you will get there. Students lose marks every year to a night of no sleep in a strange place, and that is a solvable problem in a way that Chemistry sometimes is not.
