Ethiopia's Grade 12 national exam 2026 (2018 E.C.): dates, online sitting, and how to check your result

If you sat the exam this year, you are now in the worst part of it, which is the waiting. What follows is everything that has actually been announced about the 2018 E.C. cycle, in one place, with the sources attached. Most of the panic every year comes from the gap between the real announcement and the dozen Telegram channels reposting a version of it.

EAES released the exam calendar in April 2026, then adjusted it slightly after consultations with education stakeholders. The final window ran from 30 June to 23 July 2026, split by stream so the two groups never sit on the same day.

You will see two figures quoted for total registration, 563,501 and 563,858, depending on which announcement a site copied and when. The difference is late registrations rounding up. It is not a discrepancy worth worrying about. Either way this was a smaller cohort than the 585,882 who sat the previous cycle.

Addis Ababa, Dire Dawa and Harar administered the exam entirely online this cycle. Elsewhere, centres without the network or device capacity fell back to paper. Some outlets reported the exam as "100% online" nationally. The more careful reporting describes a mixed model with three fully digital administrations and paper as the documented fallback. If you are advising a student, assume mixed until EAES says otherwise.

Running alongside it, more than 224,000 higher-education students sat university exit exams at 88 centres in the same period, roughly half of them retaking. That matters for logistics, because the same campuses, invigilators and bandwidth were serving two national assessments at once.

The result was announced on 22 August 2026 and reaches students on 24 or 25 August. There are three official routes and no fourth one. Anybody offering to get your result early for money is selling something that does not exist, and a card claiming a 93% national pass rate was going around a day before the real announcement.

   The web portal

   Go to result.eaes.et and enter your registration number exactly as printed on your admission card, including any leading zeros. Expect the portal to be slow or unreachable for the first few hours after release, because half a million people are refreshing it at once.

   The Telegram bot

   EAES runs a results bot at t.me/EAESbot. This is usually the route that survives release-day traffic best, and it works on a feature phone with a data bundle far more reliably than the portal does.

   SMS to 6284

   Send your registration number by SMS to the short code 6284. This route works with no internet at all, which for most of the country is the one that counts.

This cycle broke the pattern of the last few years. Of the 550,210 candidates who sat in 2018 E.C., 70,544 passed, a rate of 12.8%. Read against the previous cycle, where 585,882 sat and 48,929 of them, or 8.4%, reached the 50% mark, that is a real improvement rather than a rounding difference. It is also still eight or nine candidates in ten going home without a university place.

For a sense of how sharp the earlier fall was: natural science pass rates ran around 81% in 2010/11 and social science around 48%. Both collapsed after the 2022 exam-security crackdown, to roughly 11% and 5% respectively, and the 2018 E.C. figures of 16.5% and 8.33% are the first meaningful move back up.

The comfortable explanation is that cheating used to inflate the old numbers and now it does not. That is partly true. It is not the whole story, and the breakdown by school type is the part worth sitting with.

Nine in ten candidates come from that bottom row. When the same exam produces 87% in one setting and single digits in another, it is measuring the school at least as much as the student. Reporting around the results has pointed at the underlying conditions: roughly 75% of active teachers failed the Ministry's own subject-proficiency exam, and around 89% of schools fall below the Ministry's minimum operating standard.

That view is widely held among university leadership. The counter-argument, made at length in Addis Insight's July 2026 analysis, is that removing one distortion does not turn everything left over into a measure of merit. It just makes the inequality that was already there visible for the first time.

Statistically, most candidates will be reading a number below the cutoff. It is worth saying plainly that this is a systemic outcome and not a verdict on a person. The routes forward are real, and none of them are consolation prizes.
