Addis Ababa University has opened first-degree admission

The call covers the regular first-degree programme, on a government scholarship and on self-payment, and the evening and continuing programmes. The notice sorts applicants by who pays, and the four routes do not ask for the same result.

• Self-sponsorship: a pass in the Ethiopian Secondary School Leaving Certificate Examination from 2015, 2016, 2017 or 2018 E.C., at the marks the Ministry of Education requires.
• Government cost-sharing: the 2018 E.C. sitting only, at or above the Ministry's cut-off for higher education, with evidence of the family's circumstances from the woreda or, in Addis Ababa, from the sub-city.
• Presidential sponsorship: 500 or more out of 600 in the 2018 E.C. examination, and a willingness to be placed after the first or second semester alongside the other students.
• Teachers education sponsorship: the same 500 mark and the same placement condition.

Four other groups are named. Anyone who studied at another university in 2016, 2017 or 2018 E.C. has to bring proof that the cost-sharing was paid, together with their credentials. Students who sat remedial education in 2018 E.C. and passed the qualifying exam may apply. So may students from an international curriculum or a school abroad, once the Education and Training Assessment Authority has validated the schooling, and they apply as self-sponsored. Health-related fields, law and some others set an extra assessment of their own. A second posting of the call on 29 August named one more way in: anyone who finished vocational training level 4 and passed the COC competence assessment can apply.

One line is worth reading twice before picking a department. If the results do not place an applicant in the department they chose, the notice asks them to consent to the field the university puts them in.

   Open the portal

   Go to admission.aau.edu.et, choose Undergraduate application, then Apply, then Call for Undergraduate Regular Admission, and read the programmes before pressing Apply now.

   Prove who you are

   Enter the Fayda number and validate it, then type the one-time code sent by SMS. Once that clears, create an account with a working email address and a password of at least eight characters. That pair is the way back in.

   Fill the academic profile

   Complete the form, press Update and then Next, and choose Regular as the admission type.

   Say who is paying

   Choose cost-sharing or self-sponsorship. Cost-sharing asks for at least one justifiable reason and the evidence behind it, as a PDF of no more than 5MB.

   Choose the programme

   A self-sponsored applicant picks ten options on the programme choice form. A cost-sharing applicant chooses Natural Science Freshman or Social Science Freshman.

   Upload the papers and pick a test town

   Attach the Grade 12 result certificate and the Grade 9 to 12 transcript, each a PDF of no more than 5MB, then select where to sit the entrance test.

   Accept and pay

   Read the consent statements, review the summary, then pay 750 birr through Telebirr or by scanning the QR code.

   Collect the ticket

   Download the entrance test ticket and the schedule from the portal. The test result and the admission decision appear in the same place afterwards.

The test is taken on computer, on the university's own network. The notice does not publish one timetable covering everybody. Each candidate is told their centre, date and time separately, on the university web page and on the testing centre's Telegram channel at t.me/aauGAT, and applicants are asked to check daily from the day they apply.

The fee is not refundable, so the notice asks applicants to be sure they are eligible before they pay.
