The name behind the number
When the Minister presented the results on 22 August he gave the four highest scores, the stream each belonged to, whether the candidate was a boy or a girl, and the school. He gave no names. That is the ordinary practice at these briefings, and it left the year's best result standing as a figure with a school attached to it.
On 24 August the channel Ethiopian New curriculum Grade 9-12 published the name and a photograph, and put the same 591.6 out of 600 against it. The channel does not say where he sat the paper. The school in this article comes from the Ministry's own briefing, which placed the 591.6 at Oda Special Boarding School in Adama.
Oda Special Boarding School, Adama
Oda is one of the special boarding secondary schools, which take students on their earlier examination results and teach them as boarders. Three of the four highest results of the year came from outside Addis Ababa, and this one is among them. The highest girl's result in natural science, 583, came from Agew Midir School in Injibara, and the highest social science result from Ifa Boru in Dodola.
What 591.6 is worth this year
A 591.6 sits 8.4 marks below a perfect paper, and a little under double what it takes to pass. The pass mark and the national totals are in 70,544 students passed the 2018 E.C. Grade 12 national exam.
The other three results of that briefing, and the schools behind them, are in the highest Grade 12 scores of 2018 E.C.. The social science leader has since been named as well, in the top social science score belongs to Sedem Abdulaziz, and the 583 in the student behind the second-highest Grade 12 score. The national picture is in 70,544 students passed the 2018 E.C. Grade 12 national exam.
