When you use it

Use when a question asks what dry air is made of, or names air as a renewable natural resource, one that is replaced within a human lifetime. The four figures to hold are nitrogen 78%, oxygen 21%, argon 0.93% and carbon dioxide about 0.04%.

Watch out

Students swap the two big numbers and write oxygen 78%, nitrogen 21%, because oxygen is the part we breathe. It is the other way round: there is nearly four times more nitrogen than oxygen. Two more traps sit in the same question. The figures are by volume of dry air, so water vapour has no fixed percentage, and a calculation by mass gives a different answer: about 75% nitrogen and 23% oxygen. Carbon dioxide is 0.04%, not the 0.03% printed in older books.
