Sport and society

When you use it

Use when explaining the reasons for anti-doping bans and identifying the dual health and sporting consequences of using prohibited substances.

Watch out

Doping consequences extend beyond competitive bans and medal forfeiture: non-sterile injection needles create severe health risks like HIV/AIDS and hepatitis, along with permanent social damage to reputation.

EventVAR Role
GoalsChecks if an infringement occurred or if the ball fully crossed the line before a goal is awarded.
Penalty decisionsEnsures no clearly wrong decision is made regarding awarding or not awarding a penalty kick.
Direct red cardsEnsures no clearly wrong decision is made regarding sending off or not sending off a player.
Mistaken identityInforms the referee when the wrong player is cautioned or sent off so discipline is corrected.

When you use it

Use when identifying the four specific match-changing situations where a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) can intervene in football.

Watch out

VAR only reviews clear errors in these four categories: goals, penalties, direct red cards, and mistaken identity. It does not intervene in ordinary fouls or yellow card disputes.

Health and physical fitness

Contraction TypeMuscle LengthMovement around Joint
ConcentricShortensYes
EccentricLengthensYes
IsometricConstantNo

When you use it

Use to identify how muscle length and joint movement change during concentric, eccentric, and isometric contractions.

Watch out

Assuming isometric contraction produces no tension because there is no movement. Tension increases while muscle length remains constant.

Training GoalResistance LevelRepetitions
Muscular strengthHighLow
Muscular enduranceLowHigh

When you use it

Use to distinguish training parameters for developing muscular strength versus muscular endurance.

Watch out

Confusing the repetition and resistance combinations. High resistance with low repetitions builds strength, not endurance.

03

Athletics

When you use it

Use this procedure to pass, clear, or shoot on goal when the ball approaches in the air above head level.

Watch out

Do not hit the ball with the top of your head. Striking with the top of the head causes pain and loses control, so always connect firmly with the forehead.

When you use it

Use this sequence when executing an attack hit over the net to score a point during an offensive play.

Watch out

Do not let the ball drift behind the hitting shoulder. Contacting the ball behind the shoulder reduces power and accuracy.

An exam paper keeps asking for what the year below taught. Those cards are here too.

Questions students ask

What do the Grade 9 Health and Physical Education cards cover?
8 cards across 4 chapters of the national textbook: Sport and society, Health and physical fitness, Athletics and Football. You can take any chapter one card at a time on the page itself.
Is there a national exam in Grade 9?
No. Ethiopia sets national exams in Grade 6, Grade 8 and Grade 12 only. These cards are for your school's own exams, and for the national exam that comes a few years later.
Where do these cards come from?
They are drafted from Grade 9 Health and Physical Education, the Ministry of Education textbook for this grade. A second pass that cannot see the chapter then re-derives every formula, constant and table row, and anything it cannot confirm is held back instead of published.
Is this free?
Yes. Every card here is free to read and the printable sheet is free to download. Neither needs an account.
When was this last checked?
30 August 2026. Cards arrive chapter by chapter, and the line under each one says when that card was last read through.

Revise, then test yourself

Temari turns these cards into practice questions and marks them as you go, with an AI tutor to explain anything that did not land.
